Nigel Hemming

Nigel Hemming was born in 1957 and was raised in the village of Kinver, Staffordshire. He had been interested in painting from childhood and was inspired by wild birds and animals that could be sighted in the neighbourhood.

He left school at the age of eighteen and studied Art for a one year but gave that up in order to pursue a career in teaching. Believing that teaching offers greater opportunity he enrolled for a degree in education and continued to study for twelve months. But at the age of twenty, he soon realised that teaching is not the most suited career for him and determined to take up painting professionally in 1977.

Even though he identified himself as a wildlife artist, at the beginning he was indecisive about which area he should specialise in and he figured out that people’s pets were a good source of inspiration. Therefore he commissioned to do portraits of pets and soon realised that it was dogs who were asked to paint the most.

Nigel got married in 1982 and along with his wife, Sue two other members joined their family; a cat and a dog. This experience opened his eyes to the amazing relationship between man and dog and he started to appreciate it day by day. This influenced his work immensely and he completely gave up painting wildlife at large and concentrated his work on dogs. In his own words he justifies his act saying ‘I try to paint pictures, not simply of dogs, but about dogs’.

Further he states that he is influenced greatly by the work of the great artist Archibald Thornburg and despite the medium he uses is different from that of Thornburg, he has adopted his style in most of his landscapes and wildlife scenes which were done in the late Eighties and early Nineties. Nigel admires and draws inspirations from many artists and his favourite artist is claimed to be Sir Edwin Landseer.

Limited editions of his work have been in the print since the 1980s and his work was in high demand. He has taken part in many exhibitions including a one man show and his works are being collected in both the UK and the USA. His work was first published by Washington Green in 1986 and in 1996 he was awarded the Published Artist of the Year award by the Fine Art Trade Guild.
